Robert Becker, director of Sanders' Iowa campaign, said staff workers could not recall Hodgkinson.
Until recently, he ran a home-inspection business out of his home in Belleville, in the southwestern corner of the state, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, according to Hodgkinson's Facebook page.
Stephen Brennwald, another YMCA member, said he never saw Hodgkinson talk to anyone and figured the man was a "loner". Mrs. Hodgkinson said her husband sold nearly everything from his businesses before he moved to the east coast.
The gunman also reportedly posted anti-Trump rhetoric on social media, sparking speculation about the shooter's possible political motivations.
"He said, 'I understand, ' and said he needed to take the gun to a range to shoot it, Watson said". Authorities said James Hodgkinson expressed grievances online about the president and Republicans, but they're still working to determine a concrete motive for the shooting.
Sanders challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential election.
Gunman who shot top GOP congressman had history of arrests
Hodgkinson's neighbors in Belleville said they can't believe someone from their sleepy little town would do something like that. According to the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity website, Thursday's game will still be held at Nationals Park.
"I'm sorry that he did this", she added.
He also wrote frequent letters to his hometown newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen letters between 2010 and 2012, many of which included complaints about the same theme: income inequality. "If a person has an annual income of more than $10 million, he should be proud to be an American and proud to live in a country that would allow this kind of income, and proud to pay his fair share of taxes". Court records show that his legal trouble started in the 1990s with arrests for resisting police and drunken driving. The daughter refused and locked herself in a bedroom before Hodgkinson again forced his way in and "became violent", grabbing her by her hair and throwing her on the floor, according to the report. Records indicate he has not been involved in any legal cases since 2011.
"In rebuttal: I have never said 'life sucks, ' only the policies of the Republicans", was the way he closed his next-to-the-last letter.
When Hodgkinson refused to stop, Schaumleffel called the sheriff's department.
The deputy cautioned Hodgkinson about shooting around homes, given that the rounds can travel up to a mile.
