Although he remains in critical condition, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise stands a good chance for an "excellent" recovery after being shot at a charity baseball practice outside Washington this week.
He suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.
Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said Friday that several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized. But he stopped short of providing specifics of Scalise's internal injuries.
The annual tradition of the game took on new significance after a gunman shot Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and four others at a Wednesday practice for the game in Alexandria, Va.
Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".
"This game is always an important moment for both parties to come together to support charity, build friendships, and celebrate our national pastime, but, as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning, beyond anything that we would have thought", he said.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events".
Indiana Pacers' Paul George wants out, rumored to sign with the Lakers
But if the constant rumors are any indication, George has had his eyes set on Los Angeles for a long time. If the Pacers keep George and let him go next offseason, they wouldn't receive anything back for him.
Scalise has remained under sedation, although doctors have lightened the medication at times so that the congressman can communicate with relatives. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries.
Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.
Law enforcement officials proceeded Friday with their investigation of the attack at a suburban Virginia park, including examining Hodgkinson's social media activities and his home in Belleville, Illinois. Griner, who is still in the hospital, was shot in the ankle.
Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's.
Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized.
