Kochi Metro inauguration: Modi flags off first train

To mark the inauguration of the Kochi Metro, PM Narendra Modi will enjoy a ride on it along with Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu, CM Pinarayi Vijayan and other dignitaries. He will proceed to Palarivattom station to board the Metro to Pathadipplam and will return to Palarivattom.

Apparently, the induction ceremony courted controversy after the Kerala government notification eluded E Sreedharan among the VIP guests to sit along with PM Modi during the inaugural ceremony of Kochi Metro.

The leaders took a ride from the Southern Naval Command's air terminal to the Palarivatom station. Hence it is fitting that Kochi should have a Metro rail facility. Pawan Kumar and Anil Kumar will be there supporting them from the drivers' cabins. He later addressed a large gathering at the function to dedicate Kochi Metro to the nation.

The headway will be 8:20 minutes and there will be 219 trips between 6 am and 10 pm from Monday, she added.

He said 50 other cities in the country plan to implement metro rail systems. "Kochi has been a different environment; the operating costs were very high, apart from this the material and man power is costly", Sreedharan had said. Initially, it will enable citizens of Kochi to avail of metro services. "Integration of modes of transport is a must, credit of water metro goes to KMRL".
