Germany: number of Britons granted citizenship quadruples

Germany's federal statistics office said 2,865 Britons took German citizenship previous year.

"A connection with Brexit is obvious", the statistic office said, noting it was the highest ever recorded number for British citizens.

"The number of citizens of the United Kingdom who were naturalised as German citizens increased in particular, which suggests some link with the Brexit issue", the Federal Statistical Office said.

Other European countries have also seen a rise in applications from British citizens, including France and Italy. That's 361% more than in 2015 and the highest annual number yet measured for Britons.

Ibrahimovic future at United up in the air
However, the knee ligament damage he sustained in the Europa League match with Anderlecht in April complicated matters. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had an average shot accuracy of 55% in the Premier League this season .

Still, Britons made up a small portion of the 110,383 foreigners who received German citizenship last year, a 2.9 percent increase over the previous year.

On average, only 1.6 per cent of all applications for German citizenship that are granted come from European Union countries. Of the 110,400 foreigners naturalized a year ago, the biggest group was from Turkey, followed by Poles, Ukrainians, Kosovars and Romanians.

The second largest group was from Poland, with 6,632.

The largest group of people taking up German citizenship came from Turkey, although the total of 16,290 was down 17.3% from past year. The sudden surge stems from a sobering reality for Brits who live elsewhere in Europe, or would like to someday: EU citizens can live and work anywhere within the union, and it isn't clear whether Brits will maintain this status in the future.
