It was reported earlier this week that #Robert Mueller is investigating the US president for obstruction of justice after he reportedly asked then-FBI director #James Comey to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn. "Witch Hunt", Trump tweeted on Friday morning.
But it's the firing of FBI Director James Comey that investigators are now exploring-to determine whether the President was trying to obstruct justice. The president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction, " lawyer Jay Sekulow from Trump's legal team told NBC's Meet The Press program.
Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.
However in an interview with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" Sekulow admitted that he doesn't actually know for certain if Trump is under investigation or not because he can't read the mind of special counsel Robert Mueller.
Boente, however, was nominated by former President Barack Obama and his USA attorney's office has already been leading parts of the federal investigation.
Trump did not identify "the man" but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No. 2 official who appointed Mueller on May 17, supervises the probe, and wrote a memo to Trump critical of Comey that preceded Comey's firing.
Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, also has retained an attorney to represent him.
Trump lawyer says President isn't under investigation, despite tweets
Both the House and the Senate also have open investigations into Russian interference in last year's election. Echoing tweets from Thursday, he concludes by adding: " Witch Hunt ".
If Trump's goal is to limit Mueller's probe or force him out, Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said this week, "that would be disastrous for him". His comment came after a friend of President Trump's, Newmax CEO Chris Ruddy, said Monday that the president is considering firing the special counsel.
But some Republicans have appeared to sour on Mueller in recent days, arguing that his friendship with Comey and decision to hire prosecutors who have donated to Democratic candidates gave the appearance of conflicts.
Additionally, people have been speculating for weeks whether or not the President is going to fire Mueller.
Although the White House initially said Rosenstein's memo led Trump to fire Comey, the president later said he did so because of the Russian Federation investigation.
Before his dismissal, Comey confirmed the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been investigating alleged Russian government efforts to interfere in the election, including any links between Trump's campaign and Moscow. "Gen. Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will shut down the investigation, he's in for a rude awakening", the California Democrat said, reports The Los Angeles Times.
"The way the director handled the conclusion of the email investigation was wrong", Rosenstein wrote, failing to acknowledge the fact Trump cheered Comey's inquiry of Clinton on during the 2016 campaign.
"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point. That is why investigators want to know more about a meeting between Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and executives of Vnesheconombank, a Russian state-owned development bank now under US sanctions.
