Diana Taurasi breaks WNBA career scoring record

Taurasi broke the record in the closing seconds of the first half, coming around a screen by Emma Cannon near the top of the key and knifing into the lane, past Nneka Ogwumike, for a layup.

Taurasi scored 15 points against the Sky, and is just 14 points shy of passing the 7,488 points Tina Thompson had from 1997-2013.

Friday's matchup of the Mercury and the Sky will air on ESPN3 and NBA TV. Sugar Rodgers contributed 19 points, including two free throws with 2:53 left in overtime that put NY up for good 92-91, their first lead since the first quarter.

She said in the weeks leading up to the historic points that she wasn't thinking about the record. Taurasi re-entered the game in the second quarter and went to work on the record book while the Sparks maintained a big lead.

Another proposal which was tested at the U20 World Cup in Korea is a change to the order of penalty kicks in shootouts, known as ABBA.

Bryant has always been impressed with how hard Taurasi works. "She's just a phenomenal athlete". The next closest active player to catching her is Cappie Pondexter, who ranks fifth all-time in scoring and more than 1,000 points behind her.

"I am excited that it is Diana and it is my absolute pleasure to pass the torch on to her", Thompson said. Five times in her WNBA career, she has led the league in scoring, including four consecutive years from 2008-2011. Diana is one of the best players to ever play the game and definitely one of my favorites. Earlier in the season, Taurasi set the career 3-pointer record.

Taurasi has never played for a WNBA team other than the Mercury even though she sat out the 2015 season to rest for her Russian club team. Taurasi has 927 3-pointers. She recently signed an extension through 2020.
