WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressman Steve Scalise can hope to make an "excellent recovery", his trauma surgeon said Friday, even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death after getting shot at a congressional baseball practice.

A gunman opened fire on the Republican baseball team's practice before Thursday's annual charity baseball game, critically wounding Scalise, R-La., and injuring three other people as horrified legislators and staffers scrambled for cover amid a barrage of bullets. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said Friday that several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference.

In the course of Thursday night's charity game, which drew a record attendance to Nationals Park, MedStar hospital issued a new update on Scalise's condition, saying that the lawmaker "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I do two or three days ago", Sava said.

Doctors say Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving.
