BJP creates history by winning maximum seats in Shimla civic body

Independent candidates won three, while the CPI (M) managed to retain one seat. On the other hand, the confident strategy of BJP of sending party favored candidates in all wards resulted in party's emergence as a single largest party. The two Independent candidates Sharda Chauhan and Sanjay Parmar being Congress supporters are likely to support the Congress.

Four Independents and one CPI-M candidate got elected after the counting held here.

Out of the total elected representatives of the Council, 50% will be women, this time. He said people had now put their trust in the BJP as they believed that it was the only party that could ensure an all-round development of the erstwhile summer capital of the British India.

The fourth independent victor, Rakesh Kumar, is a BJP rebel and he's likely to extend support to the saffron party for getting a simple majority. The results have left the field for assembly elections literally open for both the parties.

It thus ruled the civic body with its three members in the present 25-member house with the majority of councillors belonging to the BJP.

The poll verdict to the municipal body is also important as it comes in the run up to the Himachal Pradesh state assembly elections.

He claimed that in fact some Congress-backed councillors are inching to support the BJP knowing that the party was going to form the government after the next Assembly polls.

Interestingly, the age-old issues of water shortage and spread of water-borne diseases were the prominent issues in the polls, besides shortage of parking lots, traffic jams and unscientific disposal of solid waste.
