Amazon to acquire Whole Foods in $13.7 billion deal

Amazon says in a statement that it has "no plans to use the technology developed for Amazon Go to automate the jobs of cashiers at Whole Foods".

Online juggernaut Amazon announced Friday, June 16, 2017, that it is buying Whole Foods in a deal valued at about $13.7 billion, including debt.

"This deal should leave no doubt that Amazon is deadly serious about dominating all aspects of retail", said Mr Paul Cuatrecasas, chief executive of Aquaa Partners, a London-based investment banking firm, in an e-mail.

But the company had been forced to delay the store's launch, which was originally scheduled to open earlier this year, after experiencing technical difficulties with the cash register-free system.

Amazon will now control 465 Whole Foods stores across North America and the United Kingdom. Firstly, don't forget that Whole Foods is a pretty trendy and high-end outlet with an organic focus. What's more, it also isn't planning to lay off employees, according to a spokesperson.

PCC has also partnered with its competitor, offering delivery through Amazon Prime Now since April a year ago. Shoppers skip the checkout line, and their Amazon accounts get automatically charged. The service requires an app to be installed before entering the store. The store uses sensors to track items as shoppers put them into baskets or return them to the shelf.

The AP reported that Campbell Soup, Hormel, General Mills and Sysco shares fell between 3.2 and 3.3 percent, while United Natural Foods shares dropped 8.6 percent. "Amazon is the master at keeping as much margin as possible".

It's also been testing automation technology at a Seattle convenience store that's now open only to Amazon employees. The company is slowly building a fleet of outlets, cementing its supermarket dreams.

In the first quarter this year, food-and-drink sales at American brick-and-mortar stores were down by nearly $3 billion even as grocery trips rose, according to market research firm Nielsen. Whole Foods wove its way into the crowded and competitive Dayton grocers market in 2015, with its first Dayton-area store, in Washington 1050 Miamisburg-Centerville Road. But today's development will bring it more than 430 retail locations across the country, a substantial base from which it can expand its empire into the physical realm. "It'll be interesting to see what [technological innovations] they choose to pull forward into a larger-scale brick-and-mortar environment - which pieces are most resonant for shoppers and consumers".
