Samim Khpolwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed the attack and said the Taliban suffered heavy casualties.
At least 10 Afghan soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on the Achakzai camp of army corps 205 in the same district on May 22.

Raziq, arguably the most powerful security commander in southern Afghanistan, has lashed out at the central government in Kabul over the growing insecurity in Kandahar, accusing them of a plot to destabilise his province.

"Some political figures within the National Unity Government are trying to destabilise Kandahar like [neighbouring] Helmand and Uruzgan provinces", Raziq told a public gathering on Thursday. He added that Afghan forces drove the assailants back, killing about 20 of them.
His remarks did not immediately provoke a response from Kabul.
Also Thursday, officials in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz reported that a Taliban rocket attack in the early morning hit a school in the provincial capital, killing at least one student and wounding nine others. Around 60 security personnel from troops backed by the Western alliance have died in the past few days.
The Taliban is believed to control up to a third of Afghanistan, after gaining ground in the past two years.
The increase in the number of casualties among Afghan security forces has been a cause of serious concern for the government and its global partners.
